Griffon Marisa Kirisame – My god, it’s made of stars!

WAHAHA Ze~ Today we’ll be looking at an ordinary magician – Marisa Kirisame, by Griffon. Marisa is form Touhou which is some anime or something.

Here’s some music for you to listen to while reading the post! It’s an arangement of Magus Night, Marisa’s latest boss theme.

She’s a pretty old figure but I got the December re-release. She’s from Griffon, of which I haven’t heard many good things. I wanted to see for myself how they were though, since they do a lot of other Touhou figures that I might be interested in getting.

I really like how her face came out. She has a really cute expression with her beautiful eyes and cheerful smile. She also has a bit of blush on her but it’s a little hard to distinguish. Very very cute, I started to fall in love as I reviewed the photos ahaha. You could say she stole my heart.

She comes with a broom which is essential for a magician.

The hat is removable. But you shouldn’t do that, if you take away the hat from a Touhou she will die. She’s also hard to recognize without her hat. The hair is literally a little rough around the edges but nothing major for me. Also, the braid is on the wrong side!

Her hair has many strands which is pretty. There there’s a seam line on the  left in the middle of the hair, nothing too bad.

Bow and left arm detail.

There’s something off about the white parts of the whole figure It’s like it’s a little dirty, it has like a light shade on it or something. That’s probably my main complaint. Maybe they were trying to go for a more textured look but it just looks dirty to me. You can see it here in the braid’s bow. But it’s fine since the rest of the figure looks great to me. Especially her face.

Shoes! Miette was disappointed that she wasn’t wearing “Mary Janes”, whatever that is. Some sort of pot shoe?

The base has a little plaque which is a bitch to photograph without it being glary.

Like any good Touhou girl Marisa comes with bloomers for underwear. Bloomer-shots are a bit less appealing than panty-shots I’m afraid, just the tiniest bit though.

You can take off the broom.

Which leaves a hole in her right hand.

Marisa has a rather large hat.

“You feeling lucky, Ze~?”

I dub this one “Unlimited Stellar Works”. Shrine maiden, do you have enough spell cards?! Ze~

“Argh, too many stars now!” It’s not nice to boast.

I wanted to experiment a little with “Bokeh” so I bought some Christmas lights.

Made a little start shaped filter. It covers most of the image but I like how the lights get morphed.

Marisa is very cute. The end Ze~!

  1. The faces on Griifon’s figures are usually pretty off-putting for me but Marisa’s looks pretty good! Not fond of Griffon’s bases but the nameplates are kinda cool.

I agree with Miette, I think Mary janes would have looked damn adorable. Her painted nails are cute too.

Love the Unlimited Star Works photo, that angle works really well for it.
Man, I’ve always wanted to try that shaped bokeh thing but I’ve never got around to it!

    • Yeah I’ve seen and heard a lot of shady stuff from Griffon but this one seems alright. The base is pretty meh really. It’s just black plastic.

I think Mary Janes are more Witch-like. Though Marisa is a magician!

Thanks! I’ve been planning that one for a while. I was also planning the bokeh thing for a long time but I’m a little disappointed with it. It obscures most of the picture =(. Maybe I need another lens to get it to work.

  2. Well, there are better Marisa figures out there, but this one actually isn’t bad. The dress looks lovely with these frills, even though I also miss her brown boots :D

I think that her face is pretty as well as the many strands of her hair ^-^

I recently got a Griffon figure as well, they seem not as good as Kotobukiya or others, but on a shelf their figures also can look very nice.

For a decent bokeh effect the distance between lights and camera is important as well as an open aperture. There was a good video about it on youtube.

    • Hmm only other Marisa figure out there that interest me are the Kotobukiya one and the Figma, at least the one’s I know of. I was mainly interested in getting a Griffon figure to see how it was. Marisa just happened to be on re-release.

Boots? I don’t think I’ve seen her in boots before heh.

It’s true they’re not as crisp and clean as other manufacturers. The hair looks a little clumpy at places. Nothing major though.

To tell you the truth I should have tried a little harder to get a good shot for the boke. It was the last thing I shot so I was tired.

      • Oh yeah I remember you talking about it. Nekomura looks a lot more polished though.

That Marisa is really nice. She has more of a magical feel to her haha.

Not rude at all, don’t worry about it. Hmm looking at the video and doing a bit of testing it seems that if I put a little more distance between the lights I might have gotten what I wanted. Maybe getting more lights too haha.

My problem is that I wanted the boke to be star shaped to match Marisa’s theme. I used a filter http://www.flickr.com/photos/exilehero/6699561887/in/set-72157628874932967/ So only the center of the picture was visible. Maybe I should have just cropped it haha.

  3. I hear the same complaints about Griffon figures, but the only one I have is pretty nice and doesn’t suffer from the sameface problem a lot of their figures seem to have. But then, if you only have one of the sameface figures, then maybe it’s not sameface?

“Why can’t I hold all these stars?”

Now, to go Google this “bokeh” word.

    • Those were exactly my thoughts. “Hmm this is not bad, wonder why all the hate.” I said to myself. Though I think I’ll go compare faces in MFC now haha.

YES! that’s exactly the feeling I was going for. Feels good that it didn’t go unnoticed.

Photographers use silly terms. Makes it sound more fancy than it really is.

  4. sometimes I wonder how many copies they would sell more if they were actually doing photos like you are doing.
I didn’t like this figure when I watched it on the sales website…but here… It just gorgeous…:|

    • I’m glad you liked them!

Part of the reason I get certain Figures is to increase awareness of them. I didn’t see many good photos of this one on My Figure Collection so I wanted to take some myself.

    • I think the mouth looks fine really. Maybe because it’s glossy and it’s reflecting light that it makes it look kinda off.

Thanks! I’ve had it planned for a while now. I think I got the image I imagined.

  5. Love the experimental shots, it’s always fun to try new things. Marisa doesn’t look bad if you look past the small stuff. But I guess some people would flip out over them. I agree with feal87, if the people taking the shots for store images and advertisements did these sort of pictures I’m sure they’d sell more.

    • I think I like messing around with backgrounds and props more than getting your standard review shots to tell you the truth.

I wonder about that. Maybe I should cut some sort of deal with Griffon! Hahaha.

  6. The quality of Griffon Enterprise’s figures isn’t great, but they seem to be the only ones making all of the Touhou girls. I can’t believe they got the braid on the wrong side, that seems like a pretty obvious thing.

    • Yeah, by far they’re the ones that make the most Touhou stuff. That’s why I wanted to try them out really, I want more Touhou figures, and they have them.

Yeah I wonder about that. She’s pretty old so maybe Touhou wasn’t as popular then so they didn’t get the little details like that or something.
