An Ordinary Magician – Kotobukiya’s Kirisame Marisa Nemu Matsukura ver.

Because you can’t have Reimu without Marisa we shall take a look at the accompanying figure to the Reimu from last time.

Koto’s take on the ordinary magician, Kirisame Marisa!

For the ones who do not know Marisa is the co-protagonist of the Touhou games together with Reimu being the one character to rival her in number of appearances in the games proper.

Much like all other playable characters Marisa first appeared as a boss and duked it out with Reimu in Story of Eastern Wonderland the second Touhou game back in the PC-98 series of games.

While exilehero went for Marisa’s boss theme from Fairy Wars I’m a bigger fan of the one from the 8th Touhou game Imperishable Night since it sounds more fun and lighthearted.

That’s closer to image of this kleptomaniac protagonist that I have. A fun loving, hard working magician who steals girls’ precious things.

Then again given who the idiot fighting Marisa in Fairy Wars was, the more darker, sinister, last boss sounding Magus Night makes more sense.

Speaking of which, fighting Marisa is quite fun as it involves either a lot of pretty pastel colored stars flying about and flashy giant beams being shot at you. Rather unique come to think of it.

“Atashi no deban da ze!”

Much like Reimu before this figure is also based on the works of the same author, Nemu Matsukura, the illustrator of the Touhou manga Eastern and Little Nature Deity.

That pretty much means these two figures are a set.

Marisa comes with two accessories if you want to call them as such.

The first is her trademark broom, which is quite big actually, that she uses to fly around in the games. It slides in and out of her hands, you do need apply a little bit of force to do so.

An essential part for a magician or so she says.

You can also take of her hat, unlike the Griffon figure who uses nothing but gravity or the figma this one does not have a peg.

It uses the power of magnetism to stay securely attached to her head.

Without her hat I think Marisa has an identity crisis, makes me go who is this person?!

exilehero also said that without it she looks more like a maid than a magician, something that I have to agree with.

The details are not too bad, plus upon closer inspection I could not find anything bad with the figure in terms of painting, sculpting and so forth.

Speaking of close inspections, unlike Reimu, Marisa is wearing bloomers like any good Touhou girl should.

Quite skimpy bloomers…

Which reminds me, Marisa has nice slim legs, very pretty.

Such a shame her skirt obscures most of them unless you look at the right angle.

One thing that I liked quite a bit was Marisa’s expression.

Big expressive eyes, her mouth and slight wink given a different angle convey different moods to me.

From the right it feels like her usual confident self, from front  a more neutral look and from left more inquisitive or doubtful.

Hmm… I wonder if I am the only one that feels that way.

As you can probably tell from the larger than usual amount of pictures I really, really liked this figure. It’s just so Marisa like to me, so expressive and dynamic.

Reimu might be my favorite girl but Marisa got the better figure from Kotobukiya.

Much like Reimu if you are a fan of Marisa or Touhou this figure is for you. Even you already own Griffon’s or Koto’s previous rendition I think this one is worth buying.

Hmm… being doing a lot of Touhou lately in the blog, with exilehero’s Griffon Marisa, my Koto Reimu and now Koto Marisa. Well, I hope you like it because we are totally doing more Touhou figure reviews in the upcoming months. :)

Also this is the real post for this week, last one was the April Fool’s joke. Everyone should know better than to trust the internet on April 1st. Nobody fell for it anyways, right?

  1. In terms of looks I was literally more enchanted by Reimu :)

Anyway this Marisa has a nicely sculpted outfit, it’s a bit more simple in comparison with Reimu but the quillings and wrinkles are nice details.

Have you made the star background by yourself or have you bought it? It’s looks good.

    • Oh really, quite interesting since what little love I saw for these two figures it was Marisa that got more of it.

That’s one problem I find with Marisa, if you go with her most well known outfit it ends up being kinda plain since it’s rather simple.

Nah, much like every background I use I buy them. You can pretty much assume that’s how it is every time I use one.

    • I like her smile too, so dynamic, so expressive.

Seems, Reimu is getting the most love. Feel kinda bad now I liked Marisa more even though Reimu is my favorite.

  2. A darn cool figure ( ^__-)-b

She has that greatness and looks like she’s more serious than laid-back in her expression. Which is more like weird for me. =.=”

*Do not read notes below if you are a Marisa fan:*
    Marisa or Reimu? Reimu I’d say… :D
Sorry Marisa. I’m glad I got the “because Reimu’s the main protagonist” excuse because it would cover my liking of Reimu more than Marisa… in this figure and the whole. :P

    • She is cool, I approve!

A serious Marisa would scare me since it seems like she is always just messing around.

Haha, nah I like Reimu more, favorite and all. I mean she is not up in the header for nothing.

  3. Putting aside the herp derp expression I got from your previous posts, Marisa brings back a lot of memories from my days of otakufication, and yup, I thought of her as a maid at first until finally playing the game. The stars in the background reminds me of that special move she does back in 10.5

    • Lol, Touhou was always present for me during that time too. I had no idea what it was all about at all back then. Although for me the one I saw more was Alice and that pettanko song.

That background was perfect for me, I saw stars and I was getting a Marisa figure. Perfect!

  4. Hmm..I can’t really seem to decide whether or not Reimu or Marisa seems to be better…both are good?

However Marisa’s face seems quite of strange when viewed straight on..looks slightly wide? I like how she is holding on to the broom, adds dynamism to the whole figure. =D

Other than the slight paint bleed of the green ribbon on her hair, everything looks real nice and the background is fantastic. Nice photos! =D

    • Both have very nice things going for them, if could only have bought one of them it would have been a hard choice indeed.

Marisa’s face was definitely meant to be look from an angle rather than head on so I would assume that’s the reason it looks off there.

  5. As much as I love Reimu, I have to admit that Ive been getting more and more attached to Marissa.

Im pretty much going to say what should be said, She’s a gorgeous figure, I love her pose which is so dynamic, The only worry for me is the bloomers ^^ they look like the thing that sumo wears…

I love the fact that there is life with the base haha, I hate it when especially with colored base it is just plain, I like it that they added something extra.

Beautiful background picture for the shoot, suits her very well!

    • Marisa has grown on me over the years enough for her to be one of the characters I like the most.

Haha, I can see what you mean, I must say I would have preferred longer bloomers.

I still question what the idea behind them were, but given your typical plain base it is pretty cool.

If it’s Marisa, you need to have stars!

  6. Marisa! Not a fan of the bloomers, they look strange that way. I do like her eyes although at first I was a bit confused by them. Love the base. Not a bad Marisa at all. About the April Fool’s, perhaps it was rude, but I ignored it, as I do with just about everything that comes on April 1 XD

    • Yeah, I do think they are a bit odd, what have preferred them to be longer. The eyes did throw me off a bit at first but then I saw how it was set up and I thought it was pretty neat.

Haha, don’t worry about it, pretty lame and obvious last minute thing.

  7. Marissa does look like a different person without her hat, it’s kinda frightening what one accessory can do to a character. I like her expression too, it’s a lot nicer than the blank stare that many figures come with.

    • Indeed, many similar looking characters unless you pay attention even within just Touhou.

Yes, the expression was one of the selling points for this figure for me, I love it.
